IOTA, La.—Members of American Legion Post 371 recently called on Soldiers of the Louisiana National Guard for assistance and 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment was there to help.

The American Legion frequently takes on projects such as community beautification and building ramps for the disabled, but these projects cost money.  This year C Company, 3-156th and Forward Support Company, 199th Brigade Support Battalion, quickly offered their services.

Post 371 periodically holds fundraisers for materials, and commander and 40-year member, Kenneth Myers, said they count on 3-156th to help them when they can.

“Their equipment attracts the kids, and the kids get their parents to come out,” he said.

When the families arrived at the fundraiser, Myers said they found everything they could possibly need for a good time.

“They could buy barbeque dinners and listen to a live Zydeco band,” he added. “What more could you ask for?”

Evangeline resident Pat Miller climbed the ranks to 1st Vice Commander of Post 371 in three years, and he said Soldiers of C Company and Headquarters and Headquarters Company add that little something extra to the day.

“We got them to come out last year and they were such a hit we asked them to come out this weekend,” he claimed.

The Soldiers brought two tactical vehicles as well as the 240B machine gun and an M16 rifle. According to Miller, the children were occupied all day long.

“They took off towards those Soldiers when they arrived, and we've barely seen them since,” he said.
